Why we blend the Montessori curriculum and the EYFS curriculum
The philosophies and methods of Montessori and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, although different, both focus on children's development and education. It has been proven that combining Montessori with EYFS is effective because it combines the strengths of both educational methods, creating a comprehensive and integrated early childhood education experience.
Child-centered approach: Both Montessori and EYFS emphasize a child-centered approach, valuing the individuality and unique development of each child. In the blended teaching method, this concept allows educators to adjust teaching methods according to each child's needs, interests, and developmental stages.
Play-based learning: The EYFS framework places significant importance on play-based learning, believing that children learn best through exploration and interaction with their surroundings. Montessori also values hands-on learning through autonomous activities. By integrating these methods, children have the opportunity to engage in purposeful play guided by their interests while also benefiting from the structured activities of the Montessori method.
Comprehensive development: The EYFS framework focuses on seven areas of learning and development, including physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Montessori education also values comprehensive development, aiming to cultivate children's intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth. Combining these two educational methods ensures a comprehensive and integrated education that addresses all aspects of a child's development.
Structured environment: Montessori classrooms are known for their structured and organized environment, which promotes independence and self-discipline. Combining this with the EYFS can enhance children's independence, concentration, and sense of order.
Hands-on experiential learning materials: Montessori education is famous for its unique learning materials, designed to be self-correcting and engaging. By integrating these materials into the EYFS, children can benefit from hands-on experiences that encourage exploration, problem-solving, and skill development.
Teacher's role: In the blended teaching method, our teachers can play the role of facilitators and observers, guiding children's learning while also allowing them to take the lead. This approach aligns with the principles of Montessori and EYFS and creates a supportive and nurturing learning environment.
Respect for individual developmental pace: Both Montessori and EYFS respect each child's individual pace of development. Combining these methods allows for flexible adjustment of activities and curriculum to suit children's readiness, ensuring they are challenged but not overwhelmed.
Parental involvement: The EYFS encourages parental involvement in a child's learning journey. Combining Montessori principles with EYFS can foster a cooperative relationship between teachers and parents, supporting the child's development together.
In summary, combining Montessori with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a synergistic approach that leverages the strengths of both educational methods. This method provides a child-centered, comprehensive, and balanced educational experience, supporting children's development in all areas and fostering a love for learning, independence, and laying a solid foundation for their future education.
